Jon Ryan’s efforts in the Seahawks’ division-clinching victory over the Rams on Sunday night were somewhat overshadowed by the performance of QB Charlie Whitehurst in his second NFL start and Raheem Brock’s 2½-sack game to spark a strong defensive effort.
Overshadowed, perhaps, but not obscured.
Ryan was named NFC special teams player of the week today after dropping four of his seven punts against the Rams inside the 10-yard line, posting a net average of 33.4 yards and having only one of his kicks returned – for 9 yards.
“He did an extraordinary job with field position,” coach Pete Carroll said after the game.
The league office agreed. This Ryan’s first player of the week honor, but he is the third Seahawks punter to be selected – joining Rick Tuten (three times) and Tom Rouen (Week 2, 2004).
