More than likely, it’s not going to be just another Sunday for first-year special teams assistant Jeff Ulbrich.
In his coaching debut this weekend, Ulbrich will be facing the same 49ers team he played on for 10 years, marking an interesting circle-of-life moment for the special teams standout-turned-assistant coach. In 10 seasons with San Francisco, Ulbrich racked up 487 tackles while starring on special teams and playing linebacker before retiring in December and signing on as a Seahawks assistant in January.
He admits that it’ll be “cool” to see his former coaches teammates and coaches, and Ulbrich lights up when talking about the game — but not for the assumed reasons.
“There’s not really any extra emotional attachment for me, but it isn’t Sunday yet, so we’ll see,” Ulbrich said. “It’s my first game as a coach, the first game of the season, the first game for this new staff — it’s exciting in so many other ways than my personal ties.”
