Worried about the Seahawks’ 1-3 preseason record?
Fear not — there’s some historical perspective that’ll ease some tensions.
A successful preseason record is almost a kiss of death in the NFL, as the Seahawks went 4-0 during 2009 preseason and then 5-11 during the regular season. Of the last seven teams to go 4-0 in the preseason (dating back to 2006), only one went on to a winning record in the regular season, zero won their division and the average regular-season record of the seven teams was 6-10.
But look beyond perfect preseason marks and the trend holds true even still. Of the 24 division champions over the last three seasons, 13 had a preseason record at .500 or below, including three with an identical 1-3 clip the Seahawks posted this summer. Of the other 10, nine went 2-2 and one went 0-4. Again, zero division champions in the last three years went 4-0 in the preseason.
For what it’s worth, the 49ers — the Seahawks’ opponent in the season opener on Sunday and a division rival — went 4-0 this preseason. Arizona and St. Louis, the other two teams in the NFC West, both went 3-1.
