When Matt Hasselbeck was backing up Brett Favre with the Green Bay Packers, he earned the nickname “Mr. August” for his impressive efforts in the preseason.
It might be time for Hasselbeck to pass on the dubious moniker to … Charlie Whitehurst.
The Seahawks’ backup QB did not throw a regular-season pass in four years with the San Diego Chargers. But he has shown this preseason that he can indeed throw the football.
After his 11-of-22, 210-yard passing performance against the Raiders in Oakland on Thursday night, Whitehurst finished the preseason with a league-leading 635 passing yards. The next highest was 583 by – get this – Packers’ backup Matt Flynn.
OK, so the preseason now spills over into September. But just barely.
Deon Butler, Whitehurst’s favorite target, finished with 15 receptions to share the NFC lead with New York Giants’ rookie wide receiver Victor Cruz – and they were only one catch behind league-leader Eric Decker of the Denver Broncos.
