Offensive tackle Russell Okung, the Seahawks’ selection with the sixth pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, checks in with a special guest blog entry, giving you his perspective on the draft festivities and what he thinks about his new team:
What a day that was. I’m still kind of in shock. And now I’m excited, anxious and ready to get out there and prove myself in the National Football League. I was so nervous on Wednesday night that I couldn’t sleep one bit before the draft. I’ve been looking forward to this moment so much, and before you know it, my name was called and I’m a Seattle Seahawk. I couldn’t be happier.
I’m so excited to play for Coach Carroll. He has a lot of enthusiasm and is always excited. He’s a self-motivator and we have a similar personality, so I’m really looking forward to playing for him. He’s a great guy and I loved meeting him over the last few months. I can’t wait to get up there. I haven’t spoken to offensive line coach Alex Gibbs too much, but I know he’s very seasoned and knowledgeable about the game, and I know I’m going to learn a lot from him. It just seems like the perfect situation for me up in Seattle.
While in New York this week, we did a little sightseeing, we went to the children’s hospital, participated in the NFL’s “Play 60” program, and hung out and enjoyed each other. It was cool being with other top guys from around the nation. And then yesterday, we just got ready for the draft, and now I’m Seattle-bound. It’s been a whirlwind, but really fun.
The last few days were just as hectic and anxious for my family as it was for me. They were restless and by the time Thursday night came around, they were ready to go. They’re so happy for me, and they’re so glad I’m going to Seattle.
Even though I’ve been to Seattle before (we played against Washington State at Qwest Field two seasons ago), it’s going to be a totally new experience for me. Seattle’s a beautiful city and I’m eager to settle in up there.
To all the Seahawks fans out there, I look forward to becoming a part of this team and this community. I’m excited to play at a new level with this new regime under Coach Carroll and his staff. Great things are going to happen.
