Throughout the week, we’ve been offering you a different coach’s thoughts as the first minicamp of the new era of Seahawks football came and went. Today, head coach Pete Carroll checks in with a guest blog entry as the Seahawks wrapped up this week’s voluntary minicamp on Thursday afternoon (also, read special teams coordinator Brian Schneider’s guest blog from Day 1 on Tuesday, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s guest blog from Day 2 on Wednesday and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates’ guest blog from Day 3 on Thursday):
What an awesome minicamp for us this week. The coaches brought the energy and the guys looked very sharp on the field. I love that we put those three days together back-to-back like that, and we got so much done on the practice field and in the meeting rooms. It’s beyond exciting to see that type of energy, effort and improvement in your first go-round with the guys.
The thing that impressed me the most was how our guys studied, learned and worked so hard, and they did it with so much enthusiasm. While we’ve got some way to go still, this week was a start — a great start. This week was so successful because we taught our players and coaches the right way to practice and also gained a lot of info about our guys.
A few guys really stood out during the minicamp this week were the quarterbacks (Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst) and wideout Deion Branch. The QBs were on target all week, and Deion looked quick and should play a big part in this offense. On the other hand, our depth at offensive line is clearly an issue and concern for us. We’re low on numbers and we’d really like to increase the competition in those positions. We’ll deal with that through free agency and the draft next week.
Speaking of the draft, our two first-round picks are a tremendous opportunity for us to improve our club right away. I’ve been excited about these two selections since coming here several months ago, and general manager John Schneider has been doing fabulous work to ensure we make the right decisions. We’re going to need those two guys to come in and contribute right away, so we’ve really got to nail these picks.
With the draft next week and our next minicamp in two weeks, our players will get back to work in the weight room with Chris Carlisle, Jamie Yanchar and Mondray Gee. It’s been awesome to see how our guys have totally embraced the offseason program, and the results have been evident. Players are really getting better. We’ve made a push to make this the greatest offseason of our lives, and we’re going to continue to strive for that in the coming weeks and months. It’s the only one we got right now, so we’ve got to make the most of it. Thanks for your support and stay with us as we continue on — exciting things are on the horizon.
