Second quarter

Seahawks vs. LionsPeephole perspective: Fourteen consecutive completions. Moving past Dave Krieg for franchise record for career completions. Matt Hasselbeck passes the Seahawks back into the game, as they trailed 17-13 at the half.

Players of the quarter: The H-connection. Middle linebacker David Hawthorne made a third-down interception to finally stop the Lions. Hasselbeck passed the Seahawks into position for a short TD run and two field goals.

Play of the quarter: The second quarter began like too much of the first quarter had gone – with the Seahawks putting the ball on the ground or in the hands of a Lions defender. But right guard Max Unger was there to recover T.J. Houshmandzadeh’s fumble after taking a third-down pass from Hasselbeck. The drive continued, and the Seahawks got their touchdown – a 3-yard run by Julius Jones – seven plays later.

Line of the quarter: The contrast that was the two passers. Hasselbeck: 17 of 20, 136 yards, 95.0 rating. Stafford: 2 of 6, 13 yards, two interceptions, 2.8 rating.

The bigger picture: Hasselbeck rebounded from his shaky start to get the Seahawks on the board. Actually, it was Jones who scored – on a 3-yard run. Hasselbeck, however, was 8 of 8 on the drive. But the 10-play, 60-yard drive didn’t come without its tense moment. Houshmandzadeh fumbled after taking a third-down pass, but Unger recovered to give the Seahawks the first down.

The Lions were on the move again, taking the ensuing kickoff and driving to the Seahawks’ 33. But Hawthorne intercepted Stafford’s third-down pass intended for Pettigrew.

This time, it was the Seahawks’ turn to capitalize on a big defensive play – but with a small c, not a capital C. Hasselbeck did pass them to the Lions’ 13 following Hawthorne’s interception. But the drive stalled and Olindo Mare kicked a 37-yard field goal to cut the Lions’ lead to 17-10. During the drive, Hasselbeck completed his 2,097th pass to break the franchise record for career completions that was held by Dave Krieg.

The defense then did it again, as strong safety Deon Grant intercepted a Stafford pass deep in Seahawks’ territory. Hasselbeck then completed six passes to get Mare close enough for a 37-yard field goal with :02 left in the half.
