The topic was the “perfect” preseason the Seahawks had just completed, but linebacker Leroy Hill was being perfectly honest when it came to getting too excited about the team’s first undefeated preseason (4-0).
“You can’t really take anything from it,” Hill said Thursday night after the Seahawks’ 31-21 win over the Oakland Raiders completed a summer sweep of their former AFC West rivals.
“You can look at it and say, ‘We won. That was a good team effort.’ But at the same time, it’s time to move on and forget about the preseason.”
There’s more than just a little to that logic. The Detroit Lions were 4-0 in the preseason last year, but then became the first team in NFL history to go 0-16 in the regular season. The Arizona Cardinals, meanwhile, went 0-4 in the preseason last year, only to win the NFC championship and come within seconds of beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.
“The regular season and the preseason are two different things,” Hill said. “We went 3-1 in the preseason last year, and look what happened.”
Do we have to? The injury-decimated Seahawks went 4-12 in the games that counted.
“Next week – the St. Louis Rams, in the opener, at our place,” Hill said. “That’s the game we need to be focused on.”
