Seahawks vs. Broncos – 1st Quarter

In the first 15 minutes, a pair of 8’s trumped anything either defense could throw at them.

Matt Hasselbeck staked the Seahawks to a 7-0 lead with a perfectly thrown pass to rookie wide receiver Deon Butler for a 34-yard touchdown. On the eight-play, 70-yards drive, the Seahawks’ No. 8 – Hasselbeck – completed 4 of 5 passes for 64 yards to three different receivers. On the TD pass, Butler made the catch in the end zone despite tight coverage from Broncos cornerback Andre Goodman.

But the Seahawks couldn’t hold the lead, as the Broncos’ No. 8 – QB Kyle Orton – was 6 of 8 for 63 yards on the ensuing series, including a 3-yard TD pass to Brandon Stokley. The Broncos then tacked on a 53-yard field goal by Matt Prater with 1:32 remaining. Orton was 3 of 3 for 29 yards on that possession.

Hasselbeck and Orton saved their best efforts for the most critical down. Hasselbeck was 2 of 2 on third downs in the Seahawks’ game-opening drive, passing 13 yards to T.J. Houshmandazeh and then 35 to Butler for the score. On the Broncos’ TD drive, Orton was 3 of 3 on third downs for 34 yards.
