Shirt tales

Clare Farnsworth

New head coach. New coordinators. New site for training camp. Several new players. Renewed outlook for the new season. New job for yours truly.

But some things never change – like the T-shirt I wore Thursday night to final practice at Seahawks training camp. This was my 31st training camp, and for the past 12 summers the Blonde’s Pizza tie-die T has been the unofficial symbol to celebrate the final practice.

Camp Mora: Day 20

A recap of the only practice Wednesday at Seahawks training camp:

PLAYERS OF THE DAY

Walter Jones and Marcus Trufant. Neither practiced, but coach Jim Mora did provide updates on the condition of the injured Pro Bowl tandem.

Jones is scheduled to have an arthroscopic procedure Thursday morning on his left knee at the Seattle Surgery Center. It is the same one that needed microfracture surgery in December and sidelined the Pro Bowl left tackle for the final four games last season. Trufant has an issue with a disk in his back, which was revealed when the team’s left cornerback was given a magnetic resonance imaging test.

Rootin’ Ryan

Jon Ryan is in a zone.

He’s the only punter in the Seahawks’ training camp, and the former Winnipeg Blue Bomber and Green Bay Packer is displaying why there was no need to add another.

In Saturday night’s preseason opener against the Chargers in San Diego, Ryan averaged 52.4 yards on eight punts, with a long of 77 yards and a net average of 41.1 yards. Read more »

Camp Mora: Day 19 (a.m. report)

A recap of the Tuesday morning practice at Seahawks training camp:

PLAYER OF THE DAY

John Carlson

John Carlson. Don’t stop me if you’ve heard this before, because the Seahawks’ second-year tight end continues to have one of those camps where he could be the player of the day everyday.

This morning, Carlson turned in his latest can’t-be-overlooked effort. Cornerback Kevin Hobbs and running back Justin Forsett were doing their best to deny Carlson, but he was just too productive – again.

Camp Mora: Day18

A recap of the only practice Monday at Seahawks training camp:

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Matt Hasselbeck

Matt Hasselbeck. The team’s starting quarterback was rocking and firing during the one-hour, 45-minute practice in full pads.

The early portions of practice were dedicated to a review of things the players didn’t do well in Saturday night’s preseason opener against the Chargers in San Diego. But when the players came together for the full-team drills, Hasselbeck had the hot hand. Read more »

Can you hear me now?

Moving the Tuesday morning practice at Seahawks training camp indoors had its drawbacks – like only one field for both the offense and defense to work on.

But coach Jim Mora also took advantage of the situation.

Camp Mora: Day 11

A recap of the only practice Monday at Seahawks training camp:

Camp Mora: Day 10

A recap of the only practice Sunday at Seahawks training camp:

PLAYER OF THE DAY

John Carlson. The team’s second-year tight end – and leading receiver in his rookie season – is so consistent that he turns in “player of the day” efforts almost every practice.

This morning, in a practice filled with big and even odd plays, Carlson again flashed repeatedly. He got behind safety C.J. Wallace in a 9-on-9 drill to take a deep pass from No. 4 QB Jeff Rowe. In the 7-on-7 drill, QB Matt Hasselbeck went to Carlson twice in the first four snaps – once over the middle and also in the flat.

But Carlson’s best play came after Seneca Wallace stepped in for Hasselbeck in the 7-on-7 drill. Running a route across the middle from left to right, Carlson fought off middle linebacker David Hawthorne and then slid back to the left to catch the pass from Wallace.

All in a day’s work for Carlson. Again.

Camp Mora: Day 9, or the day Curry reported

A recap of Saturday’s practice at Seahawks training camp:

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Aaron Curry. It wasn’t so much anything the team’s first-round draft choice did on the field, but just the fact that he was on the field.

The versatile linebacker from Wake Forest signed a six-year contract this afternoon and then jogged onto to the field to join his teammates 30 minutes into practice – to a rousing ovation from the 1,500 fans on hand.
