On this date: Seahawks win first playoff game

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Dec. 24:

1983: In the Seahawks’ first playoff game, on a Saturday afternoon at the Kingdome, Dave Krieg passes for three touchdowns – to Steve Largent, Pete Metzelaars and Paul Johns – in a 31-7 victory over the Broncos. Kenny Easley leads the defensive effort with 10 tackles and a sack.

1994: In what will be Tom Flores’ final game as coach, and on a day when the wind-chill at old Cleveland Stadium is 22 degrees, the Browns roll to a 35-9 victory. The Seahawks score their only touchdown with 1:22 remaining on Stan Gelbaugh’s 25-yard pass to James McKnight.

1995: The Seahawks close their first season under Dennis Erickson the same way they opened it, with a lopsided loss to the Chiefs – this time 26-3 in Kansas City. Steve Broussard’s 70-yard kickoff return sets up the Seahawks’ only score, a 34-yard field goal by Todd Peterson.

2005: On a Saturday afternoon in Seattle, Shaun Alexander runs for 139 yards and two touchdowns and Matt Hasselbeck passes for two more scores, including one to Alexander, in a 28-13 victory over the Colts that caps a club-record 11-game winning streak.

2006: The Seahawks take a 17-13 lead on a 9-yard TD run by Shaun Alexander and a 33-yard field goal by Josh Brown, but Vincent Jackson catches a pass from Philip Rivers in the end zone with 29 seconds to play to give the Chargers a 20-17 victory in Seattle. Alexander finishes with 140 yards and two TDs.

2011: The Seahawks’ three-game winning streak is snapped in a 19-17 loss to the 49ers at CenturyLink Field. Marshawn Lynch’s 4-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter – the first rushing TD allowed of the season allowed by the 49ers – gives the Seahawks a 17-16 lead. But David Akers’ fourth field goal of the game with 2:57 left gives the 49ers the win. Lynch rushes for 107 yards, making him the first back since 2009 to hit triple digits against the 49ers.


On this date: ’86 Seahawks finish hot, but miss playoffs

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Dec. 20:

1981: Dave Krieg passes for three touchdowns, including two to Steve Largent, as the Seahawks close the season with a 42-21 win over the Browns at the Kingdome. Rookie safety Kenny Easley leads the defensive effort with two interceptions, returning one 82 yards for a score; and Greggory Johnson returns a Michael Jackson-forced fumble 31 yards for another score. Jackson also has 16 tackles and sack.

1985: In a Friday night game at the Kingdome, Norm Johnson hits the right upright on a 52-yard field goal on the final play as the Broncos win 27-24 behind a 432-yard passing performance by John Elway.

1986: In a Saturday afternoon game at the Kingdome, Curt Warner runs for 192 yards and three touchdowns and Dave Krieg throws two TD passes to Daryl Turner as the Seahawks close their season with a 41-16 victory over the Broncos. Steve Largent also catches six passes for 101 yards. The Seahawks finish with 10-6 record, including victories over both teams that advance to the Super Bowl (the Broncos and Giants), but do not make the playoffs.

1987: Curt Warner runs for two touchdowns, Dave Krieg passes for two more and John L. Williams catches eight passes for 117 yards in a 34-21 victory over the Walter Payton-led Bears in Chicago. Eugene Robinson leads the defensive effort with two interceptions and 11 tackles, while rookie Brian Bosworth has two fumble recoveries and a sack.

1992: Loss No. 13 in the Seahawks’ 2-14 season comes in Denver, as Gaston Green scores the only touchdown in the Broncos’ 10-6 win at Mile High Stadium. The defense intercepts John Elway three times and forces three fumbles, while Chris Warren runs for 97 yards in the loss.

1998: The Seahawks score 17 points in the final 10 minutes to pull out a 27-23 victory over the Colts at the Kingdome, as Ricky Watters has a 33-yard touchdown run, Shawn Springs returns a fumble 14 yards for a TD and Todd Peterson kicks a 30-yard field goal. Watters finishes with 178 rushing yards in Dennis Erickson final home game as coach of his hometown NFL team.

2009: The Buccaneers score 24 unanswered points in a 24-7 victory over the Seahawks in Seattle. Matt Hasselbeck passes 29 yards to John Carlson for the Seahawks’ only points, but also throws four interceptions.

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Dec. 14:

1986: Dave Krieg passes for four touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, in outdueling Dan Fouts during a 34-24 victory over the Chargers in San Diego that is part of a five-game winning streak to close the season. Krieg completes 15 of 21 passes for 305 yards and his TD passes went to Steve Largent (two), Darryl Turner (72 yards) and Ray Butler.

1997: Todd Peterson kicks a 49-yard field goal with 2:20 remaining in a 22-21 victory over the Raiders in Oakland. Peterson’s kick caps a 19-point second half for the Seahawks, who trailed 21-3 at halftime. In his first NFL start, Jon Kitna completes 23 of 37 passes – to 10 receivers – for 283 yards and throws an 8-yard TD pass to Joey Galloway.

2003: Shaun Alexander runs for 126 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown, but the Rams hang on for a 27-22 victory in St. Louis.

2006: Frank Gore runs for 144 yards and Alex Smith passes for two touchdowns as the 49ers beat the Seahawks in a Thursday night game in Seattle that is preceded by heavy rain and followed by high winds, a combination that causes power outages throughout the region.

2008:  Olindo Mare kicks a 27-yard field goal as time expires to give the Seahawks a 23-20 victory over the Rams in St. Louis. Mare also kicks 50- and 28-yarders, while Jordan Babineaux returns a fumble 24 yards for a TD.

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Dec. 8:

1979: Steve Largent catches a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jim Zorn in the fourth quarter as the Seahawks pull out a 28-23 victory over the Broncos at the Kingdome. The decisive catch is Largent’s second TD of the game, and Sherman Smith also runs for two touchdowns.

1985: Dave Krieg throws four touchdown passes, including two to Daryl Turner, and the defense sacks Bernie Kosar six times, including three by Jacob Green, in a 31-13 victory over the Browns at the Kingdome.

1986: On a wild and raucous Monday night at the Kingdome, the defense registers 11 sacks and three interceptions while holding the Raiders to 138 yards. The offensive contributions to the 37-0 shutout include Curt Warner running for 116 yards and two touchdowns and Dave Krieg throwing TD passes to Steve Largent and Ray Butler.

1991: John Taylor catches a 15-yard touchdown passes from Steve Bono early in the fourth quarter and the 49ers hold the lead for a 24-22 victory at the Kingdome. John Kasay kicks three field goals for the Seahawks.

1996: The Seahawks jump to a 16-0 lead and hold on for a 26-18 victory over the Bills at the Kingdome as Todd Peterson kicks four field goals and Chris Warren runs for 116 yards. With Rick Mirer completing 9 of 24 passes, Rick Tuten is called upon to punt nine times and averages 46.3 yards with a long of 66 yards.

2002: The Seahawks fall behind 27-6, rally on two second-half touchdown passes by Matt Hasselbeck but still lose 27-20 to the Eagles in Seattle. Shaun Alexander runs for 123 yards.


On this date: Brown kicks Seahawks to victory

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Dec. 3:

1978: David Sims runs for three touchdowns, Steve Largent catches eight passes for 108 yards and a TD and Keith Simpson intercepts a Brian Sipe pass and returns it 40 yards for a score in a 47-24 victory over the Browns at the Kingdome.

1995: Todd Peterson kicks four field goals and Terry Wooden paces the defense with an 11-tackle performance in a 26-14 victory over the Eagles at the Kingdome.

2000: George Koonce returns an interception 27 yards for touchdown to spark a four-sack and two-pick effort by the defense and Rian Lindell kicks three field goals in a 30-10 victory over the Falcons in Atlanta.

2006: Josh Brown kicks a 50-yard field goal with five seconds to play, his third of the game, and Darryl Tapp returns an interception 25 yards for a touchdown in a 23-20 victory over the Broncos on Sunday night in Denver.

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Nov. 29:

The Seahawks crowd around kicker Todd Peterson after his 48-yard field goal with one second remaining tops the Tennessee Oilers in 1998 at the Kingdome.

1981: The Seahawks take a 24-3 lead at the Kingdome, but the Raiders storm back to score 29 unanswered points in the second half and escape with a 32-31 victory. The Seahawks also lose QB Jim Zorn to a broken ankle in the fourth quarter, which sidelines him for the final three games.

1998: Todd Peterson kicks a 48-yard field goal with one second remaining in a 20-18 victory over the Oilers at the Kingdome. Jon Kitna throws touchdown passes to Joey Galloway and James McKnight and Ricky Watters has 126 yards rushing and receiving.

2009: Justin Forsett runs for two touchdowns and Josh Wilson returns an interception 65 yards for a score in a 27-17 victory over the Rams, which runs the Seahawks’ winning streak in St. Louis to five in a row.

1980: The Seahawks roll up 391 yards and take a 17-7 lead, but the Raiders drive to a late 28-yard field goal by Matt Bahr that caps their 12-point fourth quarter in a 19-17 victory at Kingdome.

1985: The Patriots score 13 fourth-quarter points to pull out a 20-13 victory at the Kingdome, but Steve Largent catches eight passes for 138 yards and Curt Warner runs for 105 yards in this odd season that sees the Seahawks systemically win two and then lose two four times en route to an 8-8 record.

1996: The Seahawks lose their quarterback and then the game as former Washington State University kicker Jason Hanson kicks a 43-yard field goal with 4:32 left to play to give the Lions a 17-16 victory at the Silverdome. John Friesz went out in the fourth quarter, and for the rest of the season, with a cracked bone in his leg – one day after signing a contract extension. Lamar Smith runs for 148 yards, but Todd Peterson’s 42-yard field goal attempt sails wide right with two seconds remaining.
