Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times, writing for Sporting News, provides this Seahawks training camp outlook, as he gives us a taste of what’s new on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, settles on what he believes are three camp goals for the Seahawks in 2012, and gives us his prediction for a breakout player – naming Seahawks 2012 first round draft pick DE Bruce Irvin out of West Virginia, “Irvin was the first defensive end selected in the draft. Seattle’s priority on defense was to add speed and improve the pass rush. At 248 pounds, Irvin is lighter than your prototypical NFL end, but he is custom-made to play the rush end in Seattle’s defense, which is referred to as the ‘Leo.’ His only two responsibilities from that position are to rush the passer or chase after the ball on running plays, and with Irvin’s speed and explosiveness, he shouldn’t struggle in either regard. Irvin has already predicted he will have a double-digit sack total as a rookie, which is ambitious but not out of the reach of possibility.”

O’Neil also joined fellow Seahawks beat writers Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune and John Boyle of the Everett Herald for a Seahawks-themed roundtable discussion on the Ian Furness show on 950 KJR AM. Furness, O’Neil, Williams and Boyle covered a wide range of topics in their two-hour Hawk-talk as the team prepares to enter training camp at the end of the month. Here at Seahawks.com Clare Farnsworth follows up his Wednesday piece on the Seahawks 2012 defensive line by taking a look at the other side of the line of scrimmage – the offensive line. Farnsworth speaks with Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach Tom Cable, who believes his unit is much improved heading into training camp and looking to make a big jump forward – particularly in pass protection – if everyone can stay healthy. Farnsworth spoke with Cable: “ ‘The progress we’ve made this spring has been tremendous,’ Cable said before heading out for the coaches’ extended break prior to the start of training camp in late July. ‘I think we’ve brought ourselves up to a level that we never reached during last season.’ The reasons for Cable’s optimism are obvious. For starters, he and his linemen had an offseason – after the 136-day lockout last year erased the spring minicamps and OTA practices. Then there are the starters, as seven linemen on the current 90-man roster started at least five games last season.”

The event offered children and families of the Ronald McDonald House an up-close and personal look at the excitement and energy that surrounds the Seahawks gameday experience.

The Sea Hawkers prepared and served brunch for the house, as the Sea Gals, mascot Blitz and Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond visited with children and their families, posed for photos and signed autographs. HAWK ONE Tailgating was also on hand, offering photos and tours of their 36-foot gameday tailgating RV.

The event also included spirited performances from the Seahawks Blue Thunder drumline and dance renditions from the Sea Gals, who actively engaged the children and their families and encouraged them to join in the festive acts.

Chris Johnson, VP Publicity – Sea Hawkers Central Council, trusted the half-day event would bring out the same sense of family and togetherness that the 12th Man exuberates on Seahawks game days.

“The 12th Man is known for their sense of oneness, rallying behind a ‘cause’ and rising to the occasion inside the stadium on gameday,” said Johnson. “To see the 12th Man, as one, rally behind the kids and families of the Ronald McDonald House while teamed up with the Seahawks…priceless.”

The Sea Hawkers Booster Club has been involved in helping charities throughout the community since their inception in 1976. The club visits the Ronald McDonald house twice a year and has visited the house a total of five times – they plan to make a return trip to the house in December.

I love, I love, I love my calendar girl

Each and every day of the year.

Geraldine “Gelly” Lirio obviously wasn’t born when Neil Sedaka crooned his hit tune in 1961. Heck, her parents were toddlers when Sedaka’s signature song was climbing the charts.

But Lirio is the Sea Gals’ “Calendar Girl,” as she graces the cover the squad’s 2012 calendar that will be unveiled Wednesday night at the Munchbar at Bellevue Square. The event starts at 7 p.m. and Lirio and the other 31 members of the squad will be there to sign calendars and model the outfits they’re wearing on its pages.

To say that being the cover girl caught Lirio by surprise only scratches the surface of her initial reaction to the honor.

“I did not have one clue,” she said. “Honestly, I got way more than I bargained for just making the squad. I’m still excited about that, and then when I heard I was going to be in a calendar it just flipped everything over for me.”

When Sea Gals director Sherri Thompson showed the calendar to the girls for the first time at a recent practice, Lirio admits, “I glanced at and said, ‘Oh, that’s a pretty cover.’ And then I went back to what I was doing.”

That’s when everyone else started glancing at her.

“All of a sudden it got kind of quiet and I see all these eyes looking at me,” she said. “I was like, ‘What?’ Someone said, ‘That’s you!’ I was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ ”

Lirio still is “figuring out what I feel about it,” as she put it. “It’s definitely a huge change for me. Something really new. But nonetheless, I am so excited about it.”

This is Lirio’s first season on the squad and the 22-year-old “rookie” from Covington comes at it from an unusual background.

“This style of dancing that we do – Sherri calls it ‘The Sea Gal style’ – I love it, but it’s also new to me,” she said.

That’s because her training is in ballroom dancing. She started competing after attending Kentwood High School and she’s currently an instructor.

“I’m of Filipino decent, so it’s customary when girls turn 18-years old to have big Debutant Balls,” she explained. “So a lot of what I do is choreograph for those events.”

There is one similarity between ballroom dancing and 50-yard line dancing. “It’s all entertainment, which I love,” she said.

There’s also one huge difference.

“As far as the size of the audience, the crowds for even a large ballroom dancing competition is not nearly the size of the crowds at CenturyLink Field,” she said. “It’s such a big chance and I’m just loving every minute of it.”

When not dancing with the Sea Gals, or practicing with the squad, Lirio helps her parents with their property management business. She has completed her degree at Green River Community College and will enroll at the University of Washington for the winter quarter.

“Right now, I consider this my job,” she said of her Sea Gals’ duties.

The proceeds from the $15 calendar go to charity, which is an added plus for the cover girl.

“I am so excited about that, and the fact that I get to represent that girl on the cover and being someone who just wanted to try out a dream that I had and I made it happen,” she said. “I got more than I bargained for. I’m so grateful.”

Now, back to that Sedaka tune.

“Of course I know that song,” she said. “It’s actually a favorite karaoke song.”

Now it just has a new meaning for Lirio.
