On this date: First step toward securing Seahawks taken

A look at a memorable moment in Seahawks history that occurred on June 15:

1972: Seattle Professional Football, a group of business and community leaders, announces its intention to attempt to secure a National Football League franchise. Herman Sarkowsky served as the spokesman for the group, which also included eventual majority owner Lloyd Nordstrom. The NFL announced on June 4, 1974, that Seattle would have a franchise for the 1976 season.

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Jan. 20:

1976: Lloyd Nordstrom, spokesman for the majority owners of the team, dies of a heart attack while vacationing in Mexico.

2000: Gil Haskell is named offensive coordinator on Mike Holmgren’s staff. Haskell replaces Mike Sherman, who leaves after one season to become head coach of the Packers.

2010: John Schneider is named general manager. Schneider had worked for the Seahawks in 2000. After making more than more than 550 roster moves in his first 2½ years with the club, Schneider and coach Pete Carroll had the team that went 11-5 this season and won the franchise’s first road playoff game since 1983.
