The questions this week reflect the time of year. We’re still a week away from the start of training camp and a month removed from the final minicamp. It’s a period to ask about training camp, coach Pete Carroll’s new book, season tickets and Brandon Mebane.
So, let’s get to it …
Q: Where is training camp this year? It looks like it is in Renton. Is this a new venue from previous years? Usually, it is held at EWU. What about next year? – Allen, Helena
A: Timely query, Allen, with training camp practices beginning July 31. Yes, camp is at Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, just as it was last year – and will be for a long time. Being able to hold camp at their year-round facility was a major selling point in the team moving into its state-of-the-art digs in August of 2008.
Camp was held at Eastern Washington University in Cheney from 1976-85 and again from 1997-2006. The team summered at its old headquarters in Kirkland from 1986-96 and again in 2007-08.
One of the advantages of VMAC is that fans can attend training camp practices – as was the case at EWU, but not in Kirkland. You can register here to attend practice this summer.
Q: I would like to know how to get the book coach Pete Carroll wrote, and also if it could be autographed by him and mailed to me? – Delora, work
A: You can order Carroll’s book here, Delora. But to get it autographed, you’ll have to attend one of his two remaining signings on his national tour – today at the Barnes & Noble in Bellevue at 7 p.m., or Saturday at the QFC in Ballard at noon.
Or, you could bring it to a training camp practice and hope that he has time on what will be very busy days for Carroll as he prepares the Seahawks for the upcoming season.
Q: What does Pete Carroll think of Brandon Mebane? Does he think Mebane can be an effective three-technique defensive tackle? If he does not prove to be an effective “three,” will he give Mebane a chance to earn back the nose tackle spot from Colin Cole? – Azul, Mountlake Terrace
A: You’ve hit on the true value of Brandon Mebane, Azul. It’s his versatility. While he lacks elite explosiveness as a pass rusher from the three-technique spot, and is not as stout as you’d like at nose tackle, Mebane fills each role well enough to really help the defense in the rotation used at tackle.
After producing 5½ sacks in 2008, Mebane was moved to the three-technique spot on a fulltime basis last season. But his sack total dipped to 1½. So obviously Carroll wants to see more from Mebane as a pass rusher.
Q: When are the season tickets going to be sent out? – Fergy, Puyallup
A: You won’t have to wait long, Fergy. The season tickets will be mailed next week, and you’ll also receive a notification via email when yours have been mailed.
Season tickets also are available for those who don’t have them, as the club raised the level to 62,000 this week. You can purchase them here.
