Moon launches new venture

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has announced the formation of a new venture, Sports 1 Marketing.

Moon, who wore No. 1 throughout his 17-season NFL career with the Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs, will serve as president/founder of the firm, which will be headquartered in Irvine, Calif.

“Starting this business is something that I’ve been thinking about doing for quite some time, and I am confident that both the timing and the sports business environment are properly aligned,” Moon said in a statement.

“I know it can be somewhat of a cliché for a former athlete to say that he misses a highly competitive environment once his playing career comes to an end. But while that may be true, for me personally, starting Sports 1 Marketing is much more than that. While I was playing, I was fortunate enough to fully realize and prepare for my business life after football.

“I’m proud of the fact that besides being known as a successful former football player, I’ve also worked hard to establish myself as a successful businessman, network broadcaster, sports and entertainment executive and philanthropist.”

Moon, who played with the Seahawks in 1997-98, still lives in the Seattle area and is the analyst for radio broadcasts of Seahawks games.

To assist him in his new venture, Moon has hired Dave Meltzer as CEO. Meltzer previously served in the same capacity for Leigh Steinberg Enterprises, where he assisted in negotiating more than $2 billon in sports and entertainment contracts. Steinberg was Moon’s agent during his career.

“I have studied the marketplace and prepared myself over many years for this opportunity,” Moon said. “For those who have followed or are aware of the previous chapters of my professional career, I can pledge that while striving to create successful opportunities for our clients, our firm will operate with character and integrity.”
