Coach Jim Mora just announced what had become apparent as the preseason progressed: Justin Griffith will start at fullback in Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Rams at Qwest Field.

“Justin is very experienced in this scheme,” Mora said. “He provides a confidence level for the runners that are behind that Owen just hasn’t quite yet attained – although we think he will.”

That would be Owen Schmitt, the second-year fullback who was penciled in as the starter during the spring minicamps.

“This is not a reflection at all on Owen Schmitt,” Mora said. “We like Owen Schmitt a lot. A lot. We think he’s got a really bright future.”
